OsmAnd Maps

The Help section of the app provides access to a fair amount of documentation including video tutorials. This document is intended as a quick aide-memoir for some of the intuitive operations, instead of a replacement to that documentation.

iOS Version

These notes were originally created for version 3.9.3 of the 'OsmAnd Maps Travel & Navigate' app.

Route Planning

Create a new route

  1. Menu -> Plan a route -> Create a new route

  2. Add points by touching map, or move the map so that desired position is under the open circle icon displayed at the end of the current leg and click 'Add point'.

  3. The two circled arrows at the bottom of the screen appear to be 'undo' and 'redo', respectively.

  4. Click 'Done' when finished.

Note: Re-arranging the points in the list doesn't seem to do anything.

Edit an existing route

  1. Menu -> Plan a route -> Open an existing track

  2. Select the desired track/route.

  3. Click on a point on the map, to move it, or insert points before or after.

  4. Click 'Done' when finished.

Automatic routing

To have OsmAnd Maps route between the points:

  1. Menu -> Plan a route -> Open an existing track

  2. Select the desired track/route.

  3. Select options at the bottom of the screen.

  4. Select Route between points. Whole track should be selected.

  5. Select one of Car, Bicycle or Walking as appropriate. OsmAnd Maps will then calculate routing between each of the points.

Note: When you export a track/route when routing is enabled, the exported gpx file contains both a route containing the plotted points and also a track detailing the actual route. The exported file includes extension tags which are unlikely to be recognised and supported by other GIS/GPS applications. So importing a route or track into OsmAnd, that has been modified in another application is most likely to lose information vital to the app.

Navigate using a route

Make sure the option to show the track/route on the map is selected. If not:

  1. Menu -> My Places -> Tracks

  2. Select the Tracks section.

  3. Select the desired track.

  4. Select Show on map.

To navigate the track/route:

  1. Select the 'directions' icon (diamond symbol with right-angled arrowhead).

  2. Select the route under the DISPLAYED TRACKS section.

  3. Click Options and select appropriate options. Ensure Simulate navigation is off.

  4. Click Done.

  5. Click Start.

To terminate navigation:

  1. Click the arrowhead icon on the bottom left of the screen. Click Cancel and confirm. Navigation stops.

My Places (Favourites)

To import into OsmAnd Maps on iOS, the file needs to be shared to the app with the name favourites.gpx, otherwise it treats the import as a track/route. Items are appended to the current list of places. Where names are duplicated, options are provided to replace etc.
