Mandrake Linux Software Updates

Instructions for updating Linux Mandrake 10.0 using the Graphical User Interface method.

  1. From the main start menu, select: System -> Configuration -> Configure your computer
  2. Enter your system administration password when prompted. The 'Mandrakelinux Control Center' is displayed.
  3. Select the 'Software Mangement' option. The 'Software Management' screen is displayed.
  4. Select the 'Updates' option.
  5. You will be prompted to allow connection to the update mirrors. Answer 'Yes'.
  6. The system will then update its internal software database. This may take some minutes.
  7. The 'Updates' screen is displayed, listing all packages that are due for update. You can refine the list according to the categories listed, i.e. 'Security updates', 'Bugfixes updates', 'Normal updates'. If you're in a hurry, you might choose to select just the 'Security Updates' option.
  8. There is currently a bug on this screen that causes the 'wait' cursor (usually a clock or watch) to be displayed, when it shouldn't.
  9. Click on the 'All' entry in the list box to select everything listed. Then click on install. When the installation is complete, a small, not very noticeable dialog box is displayed telling you so. Close that prompt and either select some more packages or select 'Quit'.
  10. Finally, to close down the system configuration screen, select 'File -> quit' from the menu bar.
